spring lab 2016 - berlin

the spring lab 2016 took place on 28, 29 (full days) & 30 (morning) may, in berlin, germany.

this spring lab contained among others:
3 to 4 different labs, each lead by one of the choreographers, a playground sessions to work on developed ideas and a lecture bringing dance theory closer to one's practise.

each lab topic or concept is based on the choreographer's current choreographic practise. this can be a research or working towards one's newest creation. in berlin the following topics will be addressed to:

musicality - by anja gallagher
when working with pre existing music, there is always this big fear of the choreographer for the dance to become the slave of the music. in this lab we explore different approaches to work with music and focus on the immediate feedback and reaction of the observer.

theatricality - by jordi ribot thunnissen
how to balance theatricality and movement quality when working on a character. while actors often are busy with the question: why? dancers usually focus on the question: how? starting with the notion of a character and having the way it moves in mind, we will work on a shift of focus, letting the 'how' of the material we find be determined by the 'who' or the 'why'.

collaborative concept development - by sanne clifford
we will work with the 'create-it-forward' system to explore our own generated ideas into movement and choreography from different angles and sharing the process. There is also room for group discussion on the ownership of an idea, concept or performance. how do you look at the process and how at the final outcome if you created in a collaborative way?

meditation for improvisation - by danielle dugas
when improvising, where are our thoughts? we can direct our thoughts in order to clarify our expression and aid movement invention. usually we are dancing with many different thoughts floating around in our heads. our thoughts are powerful and can enhance our creation. we will experiment with different movement scores to explore the possibilities.
